CORFU. The Corfu business organisations issued a press release regarding the operation of the Corfu School of Tourist Guides.
The Corfu business organisations (Corfu Hoteliers Association, Corfu Federation of Tourist Accommodation Owners, Association of Corfu Travel Agents and Ionian Federation of Commerce and Entrepreneurship) issued a joint press release on the occasion of the protest letter they sent yesterday to the Deputy Minister for Tourism Sophia Zaharaki regarding the way the Corfu School of Tourist Guides is operating to date. In the letter they asked the Deputy Minister to reconsider, even now, her decision and to proceed immediately to the recruitment of the necessary number of administrative and teaching staff which will ensure the smooth and uninterrupted operation of the Corfu School of Tourist Guides.

About two years ago, the Ministry of Tourism and the local authorities announced the reopening of the School of Tourist Guides – one of the first ones that operated in our country – which was, of course, welcomed by all of us, since it was a long-standing demand of the local community.
Two years later, the Ministry of Tourism announced that the Corfu School of Tourist Guides will not accept new students, following the request of the School's Director! Which Director? It is known that there is no Director, while either the Director of the Rhodes School of Tourist Guides, where the new students applied to last year, since the secretariat of the school in Corfu is not working due to lack of staff, or the Director of the Thessaloniki School of Tourist Guides, is acting as Director.
Two years have passed since the Corfu School of Tourist Guides started operating again and the school has only two temporary teachers whose contract expires in the next two months.
No more lies. The Ministry of Tourism must proceed immediately with the recruitment of the necessary teaching and administrative staff and solve the school's accommodation problem once and for all. Every other measure is temporary and will make any effort to fail.
For an educational institution to be seriously evaluated and gain people's trust to choose it for their studies, it must operate smoothly, continuously and consistently. If these conditions do not exist and the institution is not operating on these terms, then every effort will be unreliable and will fail. Corfu does not deserve such an educational tourism institution, nor do we want it.
The Ministry of Tourism, the most important industry on which the Greek and local economy is based by more than 90%, must therefore carry out a study for the sustainable operation of the school, to proceed with recruitments and to ensure the rights of the students.
No more lies, it is time to act.
