Roundabouts planned for Tria Gefiria, Ekati and Sotiriotissa

CORFU. The construction of the roundabouts will improve traffic flow and road safety.
The Ionian Islands Regional Administration Finance Committee has taken a decision to resolve the problems at three 'hot spots' on the road network outside Corfu Town.
Following the decision, procedures will begin to complete a study and then to implement the plan.
Deputy Regional Governor for Technical Works Manolis Orphanoudakis told Enimerosi "The good thing is that it will be included in the ESPA 21-27 preparatory projects, which means that it will receive funding as soon as the study, funded by PDE, is completed."
According to an initial assessment by Mr. Orphanoudakis, the amount of time that would normally be required by the protracted procedures of the Greek State could be anything up to 30 months before reaching the final stage.
Locations
The locations planned for the roundabouts are at the most problematic spots on the road network, which are congested daily and often the scene of accidents - the junctions at Tria Gefiria, Ekati and Sotiriotissa.
The junction at Tria Gefiria has four roads - from the north, the airport, Eth. Lefkimmis and Eth. Pelekas - and is the cause of serious delays on one of the main roads to the south.
The junction at Ekati, leading to Corfu Town, the port and the airport, always has long lines of traffic, especially at peak hours. The frequent problems with the traffic lights also lead to many accidents.
The third 'hot spot' is the junction at Sotiriotissa near Paramythoupolis. At the moment there are only small plastic bollards separating the two lines of traffic, which have regularly been hit and damaged since they were first placed there.
Following the approval of the Finance Committee the invitation for tenders has already been issued via the National Electronic Public Procurement System. The budget for the project is €2m.
The study
The object of the preparatory study is the reconstruction of the following three junctions into roundabouts:
1st roundabout: 'Tria Gefiria' - between Eth. Corfu-Girou Achillio Rd and Alepou-Kanalia road.
2nd roundabout: 'Sotiriotissa' - between Eth. Corfu-Paleokastritsa Rd and Kontokali road at the 6km on Eth.Paleokastritsa Rd.
3rd roundabout: 'Ekati' - between Eth. Corfu-Paleokastritsa Rd and Eth. Antistaseos Rd.
The construction of roundabouts at these spots will lead to improved directional guidance for drivers and reduced speeds, leading to fewer accidents.
The deadline for the submission of tenders for the study is Friday, 8 April 2022 and the offers will be electronically unsealed on Thursday, 14 April 2022.
