Public employees, health workers and teachers protest in Corfu

CORFU. A day of protest for public employees and other unions with a work stoppage from 12:00.

Representatives of public employees, health workers, teachers, pupils and other unions gathered outside the former Prefecture this afternoon to take part in the nationwide protest called by the Public Employees Union(ADEDY0 and other federations. The 'Laiki Sispirosi' party was also present, led by Alexandra Balou.



The Corfu unions are demanding the following:

- The cessation NOW of the unacceptable fines and wage deductions for workers and the president of the Hospital Employees Union. The disciplining of workers and union members to cease.
- Support for the National Health System with a significant increase in state funding and recruitment of permanent personnel. Those on temporary contracts to be made permanent.
- An efficient, focussed track and trace system run by the government with free diagnostic tests. Lifting of the EODY guidelines reducing the number of quarantine days for personnel. Systematic, free lab SARS-COV-2 checks without discrimination.
- Protective measures in workplaces, public transport and schools.
- Health workers to be included in Hazardous Occupations and death from coronavirus to be recognised as a work accident.



- Broad public information campaign regarding vaccinations, focussing on workplaces, schools, childcare centres, universities and high-risk groups.
- Creation of vaccination infrastructure in the Primary Healthcare system. Strengthening of the vaccination programme. Proper scientific information as well as comprehensive precautionary checks and monitoring of vaccinations.



- Requisitioning of the private health sector without preconditions.
- Recruitment of permanent personnel for Corfu Ambulance Service (EKAB). Permanent EKAB base to be set up in North Corfu. Permanent personnel for the water ambulance NOW.
- Suitable classrooms in schools with fewer pupils (15 maximum), prper cleaning and recruitment of permanent teachers based on actual vacant positions and needs.



- Significant measures to be taken immediately against rising costs of living. No to the tiny amounts handed out by the government. Abolition of excise duties and VAT on fuel and energy. Abolition of indirect taxes on widely-consumed goods. Respectable increases in wages and pensions and support for incomes and the unemployed.
- Compensation to be finally paid to flood victims by the state and regional and local authorities. Flood and earthquake protection work to move forward with a comprehensive plan.
- No to the privatisation of Lefkimmi Port.
