CORFU. An incident involving an Argyrades resident and hunters ended up at Benitses police station.

The resident reported that he had been assaulted when trying to stop a group of hunters in Halikouna on New Year's Day, leading to him being taken by ambulance to Lefkimmi Health Centre.

According to other information, the police had been called but didn't come prior to the incident. Police sources said that access to the area was difficult following the damage done by the severe weather in November.

According to witness reports confirmed by police sources, the victim pressed charges at Benitses police station against the hunters, whom he knew. Charges were brought against three people for causing bodily harm. The three were sought by the police but not found.

According to residents in the area of Korission Lagoon, although hunting is not allowed there as it is a Natura area, it customarily takes place once or twice a year.

According to other sources, even the custom is being abused and this leads to friction, such as the incident on New Year's Day. As someone said on the Corfu Lifeguards site, whenever the police are called out, they pass it on to the game wardens and vice versa - with the buck being passed back and forth and nothing being done.
