Lefkimmi rubbish in danger of being left on the street

South Corfu Municipality
12 Nov 2021 / 18:56

CORFU. The transfer of Lefkimmi’s rubbish is stopped, following appeals by Nikos Goussis to the Article 152 Committee.

New developments on the issue of the island’s waste – this time in the South Corfu Municipality.

According to the Municipal Authority, from Saturday, the collection and transfer process may be stopped – at least until the Committee’s decisions under Article 152 are issued for appeals made by ‘Dimokratiki Sinergasia gia to Noto’ leader Nikos Goussis.

Goussis’ appeals

The first appeal was against the 12-16/2021 decision of the South Corfu Municipal Financial Committee concerning the review of legality regarding the urgent procedure of the appeal to direct negotiation for the transfer of waste to the Palairos landfill.

The second appeal was against the 17-12/2021 decision of the South Corfu Municipal Financial Committee concerning the review of legality of the whole procedure for the appointment of a contractor for the transfer of waste to the Palairos landfill.

Both have been implicitly rejected by the Decentralised Administration and the Committee’s decisions under Article 152 (the meeting has been held for the first time) are still pending.

Should the transfer be stopped?

According to the Municipal Authority, Nikos Goussis sent today a letter to the employees of the Municipality’s responsible departments, informing them that the relevant decisions are pending and asking that any action concerning the transfer of waste to the Palairos landfill is stopped. In case the appeals are accepted and in order to ensure the public interest, the remedies provided by law will be exercised.

South Corfu Mayor Kostas Lessis told Enimerosi that the Municipality was not called to the trial of the case, while Goussis was present with his legal adviser.

Mr. Lessis said that the international tender process is underway and, therefore, the Municipality has temporarily resorted to the solution of direct award by characterising it an urgency. In case the temporary transfer procedure is stopped, Lefkimmi’s rubbish will remain on the streets.
