CORFU. The second lot of Corfu waste will be sent to DIADYMA before the weekend - "Yes, but.." regarding the waste baling at the landfill - Ioannina΄s role.

Meropi Ydraiou was busy travelling on Friday and the weekend! The Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Mayor travelled to West Macedonia via Epirus in order to settle all the procedural issues regarding the transportation of Corfu waste to the DIADYMA waste management facility in Kozani.

Although she had presented it as a courtesy visit to meet the DIADYMA Board members - and they had also expressed their wish to do the same - the reality is that she needed to deal with some of the details regarding the transportation of the island's waste to the facility.

The latest news is that by the end of the week the second lot of waste will be sent to Kozani - the first if one considers that on 11 July to have been a trial run.

The Mayor answered the questions and concerns of the DIADYMA officials and the transportation procedure is once again moving forward.

Visit to Epirus

As mentioned above, Ms. Ydraiou's trip wasn't limited to Kozani and she paid a quick visit to Ioannina in Epirus. The Mayor hasn't hidden the fact - and referred to it at a recent Municipal Council meeting - that she still has the idea of using the Ioannina facility at the back of her mind.

The reason for this as obvious - it will significantly reduce the cost of transportation as Ioannina is much closer to Corfu than Kozani.

The Mayor did her research, had some high-level contacts and left Ioannina with a big smile on her lips.

Temploni landfill and waste baling

The waste baler's contract with FODSA ended on Tuesday 21 July. Nevertheless, the work will continue for a while as the contractor has been asked to complete the baling of the specific amount of waste which was agreed with FODSA some months ago when the contract was extended.

When the baling of the agreed amount of waste - estimated at another 4 - 5,000 tons - has been completed, the space now occupied by the baler and the unbaled waste will be freed up.

This will then become the space where the 'fresh' waste will be loaded onto the containers to be taken to Kozani.

As regards when the baling contractor will complete the work, this will under no circumstances be later than the end of autumn.

Until then some of the waste which would under normal circumstances be sent to Kozani can be baled - saving some money as there won't be daily loads of waste going to the DIADYMA facility.
