CORFU. The bend at Paramythoupoli in Kontokali has now been completely divided by plastic bollards.

The work has now been completed on the Sotiriotissa bend, which is a frequent accident spot - even leading to deaths - due to the heavy traffic. The division of the two sides of the road is just with plastic bollards rather than a traffic island but is at least a preventative measure.

Now traffic heading towards town from the north can neither do a U-turn nor turn left towards Gerekou Island. This has been a frequent accident spot due to the heavy traffic and it is a wonder that there are no traffic lights there.

The turn-off leads to the 5-star Kontokali Bay Hotel (tourist coaches, hired cars), Kontokali football pitch, the Durrells' villa, Kontokali beach, tourist accommodation, cafes and restaurants and, of course, a resitential area for permanent residents.

Drivers coming from the north are now obliged to turn at the Agia Ekaterina junction about 1km further along. Those wishing to go towrds town, port and airport from Gerekou Island will now have to turn right and then turn towards town at the 'Pipilas' junction.
