Lefkimmi Salt Lakes: Volunteers take it upon themselves to clean up the area

CORFU. Environmentally conscious members of the public decided to take action and cleaned up the wetland, removing the plastic waste.
In collaboration with the Centre for Environmental Education, which is based in the area, volunteers got to work on the beautiful wetland at Lefkimmi Salt Lakes - which we have seen in countless photos with exotic pink flamingos and which none of the local authorities ever took an interest in maintaining.
As Enimerosi reported, this 'jewel' is full of rubbish and plastic brought by the weather and people. Environmentally conscious people like Xenia Tombrou took the initiative and invited all those who wanted to help to come and assist in a voluntary clean-up of Lefkimmi Salt Lakes, which is home to so many wild birds such as ducks, shelducks, black-winged stilts and of course the pink flamingo.
A protected area which isn't protected
Lefkimmi Salt Lakes, which cover approximately 245 hectares, are part of the Natura 2000 network as a Special Protection Area for birds and as a Special Conservation Area for the habitat of the species. They are also one of the Important Areas for Birds, called ' Corfu Lagoons' and come under the regulations of biodiversity law N.3937/2011.
