CORFU. "Composting is a natural process in which organic waste, such as fruit, vegetables and leaves, is transformed into a rich organic mixture – compost."

(Athenagorio 4th Experimental Primary School) Corfu Athenagorio 4th Experimental Primary School is taking another step towards environmental awareness and sustainable development!

On Tuesday, February 11, the official launch of the composting programme took place at the school, with the installation and use of appropriate composters. The goal is to educate and raise awareness among children about organic waste recycling and the creation of natural fertiliser.

Composting is a natural process in which organic waste, such as fruit, vegetables and leaves, is transformed into a rich organic mixture – compost. This valuable product acts as a soil conditioner and natural fertiliser, which we can use in flower pots and our school garden, enhancing the natural growth of plants.

At the school, a greenhouse is currently being installed—an initiative that will further educate students on sustainable agriculture and plant cultivation in a controlled environment. The compost produced will be used in this space to support plant growth.

As part of these activities, the school hosted the North Corfu Deputy Mayor of Circular Economy and Environment, Ms. Spyridoula Kokkali. She informed pupils and teachers about the benefits of composting and the importance of the circular economy. Ms. Kokkali delivered an engaging and insightful lesson on sustainability, incorporating educational games for all students, leaving a lasting impression.

All the children participated in the initiative by bringing fruit and vegetables, which were used in the composting process. Through collective effort, we can make a difference and contribute to creating a more ecological and sustainable environment.

The school’s teachers extend their heartfelt thanks to Deputy Mayor Ms. Kokkali for her invaluable contribution to the pupils!
