Kavadades residents at the end of their tether due to lack of water
CORFU. DEYAK says that the damage in the well will be repaired within the day. Starting from tomorrow, water supply will return to normal.
Yet again this summer, Kavadades residents are having to put up with the usual problem with their water supply.
Enimerosi has been told that the tapss have run dry, and in the event that water does eventually arrive once a day, the pressure is so low that it cannot meet the increased demand. An Enimerosi reader has reported that they have been without water for 32 days, and nobody from the DEYAK has responded to them regarding why this is happening and when the water supply will return to normal.
The President of the Kavadades Community, Anastasia Lioudaki, is closely monitoring the issue. She has already contacted both North Corfu Municipality and DEYAK, and has now initiated legal action while gathering evidence to submit to the Prosecutor.
"The water supply problem is essentially something we have faced every summer for the past 10 years," Ms. Lioudaki said. "This year, we have been experiencing it for a month and a half. Water may come once a day, with very low pressure, for an hour. We have all procured tanks and are buying water to meet our daily needs."
Of course, this solution comes with a cost depending on consumption, as each refill is priced at 100-120 Euros, and in most cases, additional orders are required to meet the households' weekly needs.
Kavvadades has 500 residents; however, there are also villas built in the area for tourist use, resulting in an increase in population and, consequently, an increased demand for water during the summer.
Ms. Lioudaki told Enimerosi that other villages such as Dafni, Raftades, Armenades, Arillas and Agios Georgios also face water supply problems.
What DEYAK says
According to DEYAK Board Member, Vassilis Argyros, the problem arose due to a fault in the well that supplies water to the village. As he stated, the damage will be repaired within the day, and water supply will return to normal from tomorrow.
"The pump burnt out and will be replaced," he told Enimerosi. "Unfortunately, there is only one person on the entire island who can perform these replacements. The village did not have sufficient water for 3-4 days. However, they had water from elsewhere." He stated that there is currently an adequate water supply in Corfu, and wherever there is a water supply issue, it is due to some damage or fault.
Open letter from LA.SY political party
The water issues throughout the entire area of the Municipality of North Corfu was also the subject of an open letter (17/07) from LA.SY party, requesting the convening of an extraordinary session of the Municipal Council.
