Nothing random about doctors’ resignations
CORFU. Public Health System (ESY) doctors join the protest over conditions at the hospital.
(Extract from the announcement from Corfu Union of ESY Doctors)
"... There is a clear risk that, from January 1, the hospital will have only two anaesthesiologists, no matter how much the spin doctors try to sugarcoat it."
"... The resignations of our colleagues are not random; they are not 'private decisions.' They are the natural result of a policy that treats doctors as disposable and citizens as a given.
They learned nothing from the wave of resignations three years ago. They learned nothing from the domino effect that crippled the Radiology Department. We are not asking for favours or exceptions. We are asking for the basics:
-
That doctors can work safely and with dignity,
-
That patients can be treated without playing 'Russian roulette' depending on on-call schedules,
-
That Corfu Hospital functions as a hospital, not as a backdrop for press releases.
From now on, every resignation, every vacancy, every suspended department has a name: it belongs to those who legislate, make decisions, and pose for smiling photos while stripping healthcare bare in an island, touristy, 'cosmopolitan' area.
We call on the citizens of Corfu not to accept this downgrade.
Not to see it as 'normal' that in 2026 operations might be cancelled because there are no anaesthesiologists.
Not to accept that their lives are worth less just because they live on an island."
