Passengers on Saturday’s 5:30 p.m. ferry from Corfu to Igoumenitsa faced a great ordeal and moments of anxiety when the vessel was caught in a powerful storm.
According to eyewitness accounts, the ship made three attempts to enter the port of Igoumenitsa, while crew members worked tirelessly to secure a safe docking. Several passengers reported feeling frightened during the voyage due to gale-force winds and torrential rain.
The ferry managed finally to berth safely, and all passengers disembarked without incident. One traveller captured video footage of the ordeal, showing the harsh conditions at sea.
The incident once again underscores the difficulties bad weather can create for maritime routes, as well as the crucial role of the crew in safeguarding passenger safety.
