4-Day Trip to Nafplio - December 12-15, 2024
Day 1: Corfu - Igoumenitsa - Nafplio
Meeting at the port of Corfu and departure by ferry at 7:30 a.m. for Igoumenitsa. Travelling via the Egnatia Highway, with stops along the way for food and coffee, we will arrive in Nafplio. Nafplio is one of Greece's most beautiful and historic cities, located in Argolis on the Argolic Gulf. It is known for its rich history, as it was the first capital of the independent Greek state from 1828 to 1834, before the capital was moved to Athens. Nafplio beautifully combines natural beauty with architectural heritage and monuments, such as Palamidi, the Akronafplia Castle, and Bourtzi, the small castle in the middle of the harbour. The town also boasts important museums, like the Archaeological Museum and the War Museum, while its coastal area is full of cafes, restaurants, and shops, creating a unique atmosphere. Arrival and check-in at our hotel. Free time to explore the city. Overnight stay.
Day 2: Nafplio - Vytina - Dimitsana - Stemnitsa
After breakfast at the hotel, we depart for a unique day trip. Our first stop is the village of Vytina. This charming traditional village is located on Mount Mainalo in Arcadia, in the Peloponnese. It is known for its natural beauty, with dense forests of fir and pine, cool mountain air, and scenic landscapes. Our next destination is Dimitsana, a village that combines history, tradition, and natural beauty, offering a unique experience for visitors. We will enjoy a walk through its picturesque, stone-built houses, narrow streets, and the stunning views of the Lousios River Valley. Our excursion continues with a visit to Stemnitsa, a village famous for its local products, including its renowned balsamic vinegar, honey, and traditional woven textiles. We will enjoy lunch at one of the traditional local restaurants. Late in the afternoon, we return to our hotel. Overnight stay.
Day 3: Nafplio - Palamidi - Mycenae
We will have breakfast at the hotel and begin our day. Our first visit is to Palamidi, a majestic fortress overlooking the city of Nafplio in Argolis, one of Greece's most significant historical and architectural monuments. Built atop the hill of Palamidi at an elevation of about 200 metres, the fortress offers panoramic views of Nafplio, the Argolic Gulf, and the surrounding islands. Palamidi is open to the public and remains one of Greece's most impressive fortresses and a popular tourist destination. Our next destination is one of the most important archaeological sites in ancient Greece, Mycenae. Located in Argolis, about 20 kilometres from Nafplio, Mycenae was the capital of the Mycenaean civilisation. Mycenae impresses visitors with its ancient grandeur and is part of UNESCO's World Heritage. It is a place where history, myth, and archaeology come together to create a unique experience for visitors. Return to our hotel. Overnight stay.
Day 4: Nafplio - Kalavryta - Agia Lavra - Place of Sacrifice - Igoumenitsa
After breakfast, we will depart from beautiful Nafplio and begin our return journey. We will have the opportunity to visit Kalavryta, a beautiful and historic town located in mountainous Achaia, on the slopes of Mount Helmos, and one of the most popular destinations for visitors seeking a blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. There, we will visit the Monastery of Agia Lavra, one of Greece's most historic and significant religious destinations. Agia Lavra is not only a religious centre but also a symbol of Greek resistance and dedication to freedom, with its history forming an important part of Greece's cultural and national heritage. Our next visit is to the Place of Sacrifice in Kalavryta, closely linked to the tragic history of the Kalavryta Massacre during the German occupation in Greece in December 1943, and to the Greek people's resistance against the occupiers. In the evening, we will arrive at the port of Igoumenitsa and return on the evening ferry.
