Water shortage problem growing - Kato Garouna and Agios Gordis in state of emergency
CORFU. The adoption of emergency measures has been deemed necessary.
The water shortage is intensifying, with some areas facing serious issues. The areas of Kato Garouna and Agios Gordis are in a state of emergency since, according to DIADEYAK, the borehole sources that have been supplying these areas with water for decades have dried up. As a result, specific measures had to be taken.
"DIADEYAK has started drilling a new, deeper borehole, hoping to find a sufficient quantity of water to meet the needs.
Therefore, until the borehole is completed, everyone affected by this unprecedented situation is urged to show understanding and to utilise any alternative options they may have.
In areas where there is still a limited water supply, it is requested that the public avoid any wastage and to use the water as if there were emergency conditions."
Corfu, in general, is also facing a serious problem. According to DIADEYAK, the boreholes have started to underperform or dry up, resulting in the implementation of water usage restriction measures. The following consumption restriction measures have been decided:
"The prohibition of filling private swimming pools with water from the DIADEYAK water supply network.
All consumers must limit the use of the water supply network to domestic needs only and not waste it on watering plants, washing down streets, yards, washing cars, and other similar uses.
Hospitality and catering businesses should inform their customers about the need to conserve water."
DIADEYAK is creating new boreholes, deepening others, and attempting to address water supply network failures more quickly in order to cope with the increased problem of maintaining a smooth water supply.
