Central Corfu Municipality on implementation of Fire Protection Regulations for properties in wooded areas

CORFU. The implementation of the fire protection regulations for properties within and near wooded areas is mandatory. In case of non-compliance by the responsible parties, they will face the prescribed sanctions.

(Central Corfu Municipality) The Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality informs its residents that an interpretative circular has been issued following the Ministerial Decision of the Ministers of Environment and Energy - Interior - Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, regarding the regulations for the fire protection of properties within or near wooded areas of the Ministry of Environment & Energy. According to the regulation, property owners of plots or fields on which buildings have been erected and fall into one of the following categories:

A. Are located within forests, forested areas, and grassland areas, specifically:

  • In woods or forest ecosystems or wooded areas of paragraphs 1, 2, and 3 of Article 3 of Law 998/79.
  • In grassland areas located on semi-mountainous, mountainous, and rugged terrains of paragraph 1 of Article 5 of Presidential Decree 32/2016, whether they are public or recognised as private.
  • In flat grassland areas (non-mountainous or semi-mountainous and not located on rugged terrains) of paragraph 3 of Article 5 of Presidential Decree 32/2016.

B. Are located wholly or partially within a radius of 300 metres from the boundaries of the areas mentioned above (A).

C. Are situated within urban green spaces and in declared wooded or reforested areas, as per paragraph 4 of Article 3 of Law 998/79, as amended.

D. Are within a radius of 300 metres from the boundaries of the areas mentioned above (C).

E. Are situated within parks and wooded areas of towns and residential areas, as per paragraph 4 of Article 3 of Law 998/79.

 

have the following obligations:

  1. By 31/03/2024, with the assistance of a technical expert, to prepare a risk assessment form and a technical report to be submitted to the Department of Environment, Natural Resources, Energy & Industry of the Directorate of Environment and Planning.

  2. By 30/04/2024, following the technical report, property owners are required to submit a declaration of implementation of fire safety measures in which they declare the correct implementation of measures (preventive fire protection, passive fire protection, active fire protection) provided in the report of the competent technical expert based on the provisions of the regulation for the protection of their property in case of a fire incident.

The risk assessment form, the technical report of the competent technical expert, and the declaration of implementation of fire safety measures by the owner shall be submitted in duplicate in printed form to the Municipality of Central Corfu until the operation of the special online platform on which they will be recorded.

  • Preventive fire protection measures are mandatory for all properties of the aforementioned cases from the current fire season of 2024.
  • Passive and active fire protection measures are mandatory from 31/03/2025 for properties characterised as high and very high risk and from 31/03/2026 for those of low or medium risk.

Implementation is mandatory

The implementation of the property fire protection regulations within and near wooded areas is mandatory. In case of non-compliance by the responsible parties, they will face the prescribed sanctions according to the Regulations.
