ATHENS. Deadline extended to the end of February.

The Minister of National Economy and Finance, Kostis Hatzidakis, announced a two-month extension for the payment of the 2024 Road Tax.

Vehicle road tax can be paid without penalty until the end of February (29/2).

However, the Ministry announced that there will be a graduated fine system for those who are negligent or fail to pay their vehicle road tax on time.

Graduated Fine System

The new system with graduated penalties will be applied to those who don't pay their vehicle circulation taxes on time.

The penalty for late payment will not go directly to 100% from the first day overdue, as is the case today. Instead, there will be stages and scales of fines:

  • Small delay (e.g., 1 month): a smaller penalty (not double the road tax as it is today, but, for example, 20%).
  • Longer delay (e.g., 2 months): a larger penalty.
  • Even longer delay: an even larger penalty, up to 100%.

Immobilised vehicles

Those who wish to keep their vehicles immobilised will need to submit an online declaration on the MyCAR platform of the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE). Moreover, there is no need to remove the licence plates, which remain on the vehicle. Instead, the parking space where the car will remain immobilised should be declared.

However, those who are found to be driving their vehicles after declaring them immobilised will be required to pay a fine of 10,000 Euros, which increases to 30,000 Euros if repeated. They will also lose the vehicle's driving licence for three years.

Payment methods

Road taxes for 2024 remain at the same levels as this year, and vehicle owners can pay them using the following methods:

  • Via the automatic transaction machines located in banks. In this case, the QR Code will be required, which is the icon located in the upper right corner of the notification.

  • Through Web banking if you have access to the available application from your bank. In this case, the RF code will be required. This is the 23-digit number located in the centre of the notification immediately after the letters "RF."

  • At the nearest bank or at a branch of the Hellenic Post (ELTA), having previously printed out the notification.
