Corfiot Spyros Flambouriaris dies
He passed away today, Tuesday 5 December, in London where he was hospitalised due to health problems.
Spyros Flambouriaris passed away today, Tuesday 5 December, not even a month after the passing of his beloved sister Emilia (16 November). He died in London, where he was hospitalised due to health problems. His funeral will take place in London.
He is the founder of the 'Emilia and Spyros Flambouriaris Foundation' which includes his hotel, his villa in Barbati and his and his sister's assets.
The Count Spyros Flambouriaris, President of the Corfu Heritage Foundation, had lived most of his life in London and was married to the English painter Milly Flambouriari.
He belonged to a historic family with roots in Byzantium, a presence in Venice and a reference to the Libro D'Oro. He co-founded the Edward Lear Society in 2014. Spending his time both in Corfu and London, he supported the associations that keep the island's cultural trust alive.
It was Wednesday 14 September 2016, when the renovated first floor hall of the Reading Society building was officially opened. The Reading Society honoured Spyros Flambouriaris for fully funding this renovation, but also for his long and varied contribution to the Society and to Corfu society in general. All of this was pointed out at the time by the president of the Reading Society, Yiannis Pieris.
Spyros Flambouriaris repeatedly addressed public affairs with his actions and statements. Owner among others of the iconic hotel next to the Ionian Academy (today the main building of the Ionian University), he also stirred things up with the donation of the obelisk in memory of those who lost their lives in Corfu from the Ottoman siege of 1716 at the port roundabout, which caused reactions.
The Board of the 'Mantzaros' Philharmonic Society, in a meeting following the announcement of the death of Spyros Flambouriaris, unanimously decided the following:
- To express its sincere condolences to the family, friends and associates of the deceased.
- The flag of the 'Mantzaros' Philharmonic Society will flow at half-mast for three days 3.
- The whole Board of Directors will attend the funeral.
- The 'Mantzaros' Philharmonic Band will accompany the procession.
- To publish this in the local press and the media of the 'Mantzaros' Philharmonic Society.
Enimerosi expresses their deepest condolences to his family, associates and friends.
