Hellenic Union of Heptanesians opposed to wind turbines in Diapontia Islands
CORFU. "We request the exemption of the marine area in the Diapontia Islands from any future installation of offshore wind farms without the consent of the local community of the Diapontia Islands."
(Hellenic Union of Heptanesians) The Small Islands Committee of the Hellenic Union of Heptanesians, following the unanimous agreement of the President and members of the Board of Directors, expresses its opposition to the installation of a marine wind park in the Diapontia Islands in the Corfu Prefecture.
The Greek Hydrocarbons and Energy Resources Management Company has opened the Strategic Environmental Impact Assessment for the National Offshore Wind Park Development Programme, which includes the Diapontia Islands, for public consultation until November 30, 2023, .
The overall plan is subject to public consultation without the establishment of the National Spatial Strategy for the Maritime Space and the envisaged Maritime Spatial Planning Frameworks. The minimum distance from the coast of Othoni will be 1.5 nautical miles, while the European average distance is 14 nautical miles.
Furthermore, the wind turbines in the DiapontiaIslands, with a height of 280 metres, will exceed the highest peak of Erikoussa (130 metres) and Mathraki (154 metres), and will surpass two-thirds of the highest peaks of Othoni.
