CORFU. "The phenomenon of violence against women is ongoing and does not discriminate based on age, colour, class, or race; it can happen to any woman, in any family. It is a phenomenon that affects all societies on a global level."

(Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality) On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence, designated on November 25th each year by the United Nations General Assembly (1999), the Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands, along with collaborating organisations, is planning to organise the following activities:

  • Illumination of the Old Town Hall of Corfu throughout the week, from November 22nd to November 29th. Orange is the official colour of international awareness for the elimination of violence against women.

  • Information and awareness seminar on the theme: "The many faces of violence against women - prevention and response" in the conference hall in Faliraki, on Wednesday, November 29th, from 18:00 to 21:00.

November 25th is dedicated to highlighting this significant issue, as there has been a global increase in incidents. Its purpose is to remind us of the necessity to activate and awaken our society against any form of violence experienced by women.

The phenomenon of violence against women is ongoing and does not discriminate based on age, colour, class, or race; it can happen to any woman, in any family. It is a phenomenon that affects all societies on a global level. Bringing gender-based violence to light through any means is an obligation of social structures, aiming to break the bonds of silence and empower women at risk or already experiencing violence. This empowerment involves providing them with knowledge, encouraging them to seek help, helping them feel safe and not alone - essentially freeing their souls.

Through these actions, the public will have the opportunity to learn about state structures that function supportively, as well as helplines. The seminar will address various forms of violence in domestic and professional environments, the impact of violence on the mental and physical health of women at different stages of their lives, and ways professionals in the health sector, scientific personnel, and state structures can address and help women escape gender-based violence.

The seminar programme will be sent in a new press release.

The actions are being organised by the Department of Public Health Protection and Promotion and Health KEP, the Help at Home Programme, the Community Centre with a Roma Annex, and the Women's Shelter (projects co-funded by Greece and the European Union - European Social Fund - through the Operational Programme "Ionian Islands 2014-2020") of the Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality, as well as collaborating entities, Corfu Health Centre, Corfu Police Department for Combating Domestic Violence, and the participation of Corfu Centre for Interdisciplinary Evaluation, Counselling and Support.

The responsible Deputy Mayor for Social Policy, Welfare, and Social Work, Andreas Skoupouras, is inviting the public to participate.
