CORFU. The activities were on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and were driven by the death of the 22-year-old Iranian woman Mahsa Amini.

The Corfu-Athenagorio 4th Experimental School organised special activities on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

The activities were especially driven by the death of the 22-year-old Iranian woman Mahsa Amini on 16 September whilst she was being held by the Iranian authorities for not wearing the hijab in accordance with government standards.

A discussion was held about the incident and about gender-based violence, violence against women, sexism and patriarchy. Violence in western society was also discussed and our own responsibility regarding what is happening and what we can do.

Videos were shown about the incident in Iran, general statistics for violence against women and what Muslims say about the oppression they live under in some countries.

Senior pupils read the poem "Be Quiet - Don't Talk" by the Turkish poet Aziz Nesin followed by a discussion.

The pupils also made a video and posters protesting against violence against women.
