Hotel Employees Union: Corfu School of Tourism in danger of being suspended

CORFU. The School is currently understaffed with one permanent administrative employee and one permanent teacher.

(Hotel & Tourist Catering Employees Union) A delegation of the Corfu Workers Centre and the Corfu Hotel & Tourist Catering Employees Union Boards visited yesterday morning the School of Tourism in Gouvia.

The delegation discussed with the students the issue of the School's huge understaffing, both in terms of administrative and teaching staff, which is putting its operation in danger of being suspended - a situation that has been going on for over ten years.

This year the situation is even more tragic as there is currently no permanent director to carry out all the procedures required for its proper operation. At the moment the School only has one permanent administrative employee and one permanent teacher.

Students are required to pay themselves for their uniforms, textbooks, transportation due to the non-issuance of discounted passes and accommodation for those coming from other cities.

The ND government and the leadership of the Ministry of Tourism are leading it to this situation, continuing the anti-educational policy of the previous governments and the commercialisation of education, despite the fact that they had recently assured that the School of Tourism would continue operating as normal.

It seems once again that their promises have nothing to do with the reality experienced by the students, teachers and employees of the Corfu School of Tourism.

We support the students and their just demands, and we demand from the Ministry of Tourism to proceed immediately to the following:

- Appointment of a director at the School of Tourism.

- Recruitment of permanent administrative and educational staff to cover its operation needs.

- Provision of equipment, consumables, textbooks, student passes and everything else necessary for the free education of students and the maintenance of the School's public character.

- Free accommodation for students coming from other cities.

- Necessary steps for the construction of a new building to house the School on its property at Skeros for the final resolution of the housing issue, and the operation of free halls of residence for students coming from other areas who are currently dealing with unbearable costs.
