CORFU. The pupils are protesting about the situation with school buses and shortage of teaching staff.

The pupils of Thinalia Junior High School have absented themselves from lessons from Monday morning, in protest at the school transportation problem and shortages in teaching staff and equipment.

At the moment, out of the four school bus routes, three are operational, with the pending issue remaining in the route that serves the areas from Roda to Acharavi. As a result, parents have to transport their children to the school.

Yiannis Farmakis, President of the school Parents and Guardians Association, told Enimerosi that the pupils are also requesting the filling of teaching staff vacancies and the acquisition of computers.

All of these issues were raised during the meeting that took place on Friday between the 15-member pupil council and the Parents and Guardians Association. The parents gave an update about the communication they have had with the relevant authorities, and it was decided by the pupils to proceed with today's protest.

According to the pupils, the protest will end today, and they will return to their classrooms as usual tomorrow.

Recruitment of supply teachers

Ionian Islands Regional Director of Education, Petros Aggelopoulos, told Enimerosi that these vacancies concern certain specialist lessons and do not affect the smooth operation of the school. According to Mr. Aggelopoulos, on Wednesday, the hiring of 2,000 supply general education teachers is expected, and within the first week of November, 2,700 supply teachers in specialist education will be hired.
