Two fire fronts still active in Viglatsouri and Ai Giorgi towards Kassiopi
CORFU. Residents remained awake all night and volunteers were able to protect houses at risk.
The fires encroached buildings in Old Perithia, Santa and Megoula.
North Corfu Mayor Giorgos Mahimaris told Enimerosi that firefighters and volunteers were able to prevent the fire from extending to houses. He did, however, express his concern at the simultaneous outbreak of fire in more than five places suddenly during the night.
Throughout the night, firefighters fought a battle against the flames, with the situation being better today, but active fronts still exist in Viglatsouri and Ai Giorgi towards Kassiopi.
At the fire front, two helicopters and two PZL firefighting airplanes have been operating since 7:00 a.m. The fire is estimated to have burned 20,000 stremma so far, while the situation in the area is better today.
Meanwhile, last night, around 2,000 people took shelter in air-conditioned halls at the Municipal Theatre, the old Prefecture and the Corfu Port, mainly from areas that were evacuated for precautionary reasons.
Many of the tourists are already in the process of returning to their accommodation and, as they told Enimerosi, they are satisfied with the crisis management and will continue their vacations if everything goes well.
