Rubbish already piling up on Vidos Island
CORFU. Councillor says: "Vidos hasn΄t fully opened yet - the professional taking people to the island is responsible for their rubbish."
A familiar sight has reappeared on Vidos with the arrival of the first sunny days of May. In the small harbour where visitors arrive on the private boat to the small island, there is already a trailer with overflowing rubbish and litter scattered around.
The municipal boat "Agios Stefanos" has not yet begun its shuttle service, but there is a professional who operates twice a day with passengers from Corfu as well as many Serbs who visit the Mausoleum.
The exceptional beauty of the small island, which is considered an extension of the town, is unfortunately marred by the images of accumulated rubbish, a recurring complaint of visitors.
When asked by Enimerosi, the responsible municipal councillor Vassilis Melidis said: "Vidos has not yet fully opened. This rubbish comes from the customers of the professional who makes the trips across, it is not the responsibility of the municipality. In a week, the municipality will send the ferry with the truck and the firefighting vehicle to start operations."
Vassilis Melidis said that there will be daily cleaning of all the beaches this year to remove rubbish, which will be transported to Corfu by boat. The two large containers that were filled with rubbish last year are now only used for waste from work at the camp facilities.
The councillor reckons that the municipal boat "Agios Stefanos" will start operating from May 15, provided that its maintenance has been completed.
Responsibility for the shuttle service has passed this year to to Capodistrian Development S.A. In a recent municipal council meeting, the contract with the skipper who leased it was terminated at his own request, as the service was not sustainable.
Regarding the postponed meeting of the Municipal Council on all issues seeking a resolution on the small island, the matter was finally scheduled to be discussed next Friday, April 12th at 7:30 pm.
