CORFU. With this project, which has a budget of €6.2m, the serious overflow problems in the area will be addressed.

There will be a new sewerage network in Kinopiastes that will relieve residents from frequent overflows. As the Central Corfu Mayor and DIADEYADK President Meropi Ydraiou announced, the project has been approved by the Minister for the Environment Kostas Skrekas, while its funding has been secured from the Recovery Fund. As Ms. Ydraiou said, with this project, which has a budget of €6.2m, the serious overflow problems in the area will be addressed. The tender documents are ready and the project should be put out to tender by 31 December 2023.

"It is a very important project because the problems of the past will be solved. The sewerage network in Kinopiastes had overflow problems, many areas had problems with sewage and these overflows were very frequent and caused inconvenience to homes, households, businesses and whole areas. It was a problem that definitely needed to be solved," she said.

What is planned

The project concerns urgent works for the improvement and renewal of the Kinopiastes wastewater treatment plants and the improvement of the existing sewerage networks and pumping stations in Kinopiastes.

In particular, the project includes the following:

- Construction of new sewerage networks in Ag. Prokopis, Kinopiastes, Viros and Chrysida.

- Construction of two new pumping stations to be added to the Kinopiastes sewerage system, one at Chrysida and one at Ag. Prokopis.

- Replacement and improvement of the electromechanical equipment of the existing pumping station at Ag. Kyriaki and upgrading of the building.

- Removal of the existing pumping station at Agathos and construction of another one on another land nearby.

- Replacement of the existing depressant pipes of the Ag. Kyriaki and Agathos pumping stations with new ones.

- Works to improve, upgrade and renew the treatment plants and electromechanical equipment of the Kinopiastes wastewater treatment plant.

Since 2021

As Ms. Ydraiou said, the studies, the technical report, the environmental conditions and the tender documents are being prepared by the Technical Works Department since 2021, so that they will be ready for the project to be included in the Recovery Fund.

Given that the Recovery Fund has to be completed until the end of 2025, it was stressed that the results will be visible very soon for the residents of the area.

The Kinopiastes sewerage network

Kinopiastes has had a sewerage system since the 1950s, which was extended in the 1980s and 1990s. In fact, the first biological wastewater treatment plant was constructed there, four years before the one in Corfu Town was created, with excellent results.

In 2000-2002, a sewerage network was created in Chrysida and Vrioni, with their wastewater discharged to the Kinopiastes biological treatment plant, which was later extended (2005-2007).

However, the sewerage system currently in operation receives both rainwater and sewage in the same section, which is a disadvantage, as is the lack of cesspools in the area.
