Palm Sunday procession cancelled due to rain

CORFU. The ceremony took place inside the church.
The Palm Sunday procession was cancelled this year and the ceremony took place inside the Church of St. Spyridon, which was filled with members of the public and the philharmonic bands performed as normal.
This is the biggest procession of the year with the sacred relics of St. Spyridon both in terms of duration and distance covered - along the length of the old town walls.
The cancellation due to the weather was a great disappointment to those who look forward to this day every year.
Traditionally, all 18 of the island's philharmonic bands take part, filling the town with sounds of the marches.
The procession with the sacred relics of St. Spyridon on Palm Sunday was first established in 1630, in memory of the end of the plague in 1629, which was attributed by the Church and believers to the miraculous intervention of the island's patron saint.
