CORFU. The Central Corfu Municipal Council accepted the contractor΄s request, due to the heavy rainfall and the protests by local residents recently.
The recent heavy rainfall and the protests by residents of the area have extended the deadline of the works for the redevelopment of the Garitsa and Anemomylos Parks for six more months.
The recent problems caused by the weather conditions that did not allow any outdoor work to be carried out and the protests by residents that prevented the trees from being cut down, paved the way for the contractor to submit a request for the extension of the works until 12 October.
The project was contracted out on 12 January 2022 and it had to be carried out in 15 months. According to the schedule it should normally be finished next May.
The Central Corfu Municipal Council, taking into account the contractor's written request (submitted on 30 January), decided in its recent meeting by a majority vote to approve the extension of the deadline for the completion of the works until 12 October 2023.
Technical Services Department's recommendation
According to the recommendation of the Municipality's Technical Services Department, the latter agrees with the reasons stated by the contractor. It was also stated that the Managing Authority has given the pre-approval for the abovementioned date on 9 February.
The Technical Services Department stated the following: "Since, due to the abovementioned, it is not possible to implement the project on time, our Department has agreed to grant an extension of work until 12 October 2023 (6 months), through no fault of the contractor".
What has been carried out
According to the Department, the remaining work to be carried out is about 50% of the project. In particular, the following works have been completed to date:
- The pedestrian paths in Garitsa Park have been improved, according to the needs and the new planning. In a large section of the pedestrian path (from the Douglas Column to the Garitsa playground), a stone kerb and slabs like the ones in Sinies have been placed. In the area where the pavement still exists, excavation has been carried out and concrete has been laid.
- The toilets in Anemomylos and Garitsa have been reconstructed by 70%.
- The electric lighting networks and bases and the electric lighting columns in the Anemomylos Park have been installed.
- Pruning has been carried out throughout the area, while some trees have been cut down and weed eradication has been carried out in all green areas.
- Part of the shore pavement has been removed and stone kerbs are being placed.
The project involves mild works aiming to regenerate and upgrade the Garitsa and Anemomylos Parks, so that they are functional and accessible.
