CORFU. On the occasion of the Corfu 3rd Junior High School΄s participation in the 3rd Panhellenic Online Pupil Mathematics Festival.

The Corfu 3rd Junior High School pupils combined mathematics and art in an original way, proving that science is everywhere. On the occasion of the 3rd Panhellenic Online Pupil Mathematics Festival that will take place on 5 and 6 April, pupils decided to take part with a theatrical performance, in which they talk about the value of mathematics.

The effort was not limited to the classroom with a single script, but turned into a short video thanks to the collaboration with students of the Ionian University Department of Audio and Visual Arts who filmed the theatrical event under the guidance and direction of Michalis Kapetanidis, who also did the final editing.

Unique

The experience was unique for everyone. The pupils had the opportunity not only to support their participation in the festival with audiovisual material but also to see how a short film production is set up, what are the stages of creating a film and the means used, working in practice with professionals of the sector. The Corfu Public Central Library was used as a film studio.

After two weeks of rehearsals and following a meeting with the director, pupils Grigoris Rougas, Alexandra Pigi, Aggelos Pandis, Konstantina Stathokostopoulou and Katerina Rizou and students Stratis Alvanos, Ioanna Fakinou and Fotis Pangalos took their places in front of and behind the cameras.

"The idea we developed with the children was that instead of making a presentation with the facts, we would turn them into a play, where the children themselves would be the protagonists and would discuss with each other how they see mathematics in the classroom and how they see mathematics in real life", said the responsible teacher Marios Mayioladitis.

They’re everywhere

The initial idea of the play was also based on the Artificial Intelligence programme and then through the meetings between the pupils and the two responsible teachers Mr. Mayioladitis and Mr. Kavvadias, the final script was developed. The aim was none other than to show how the world of mathematics enters into our every activity through different paths and from different perspectives.

The script

The script concerns a group of children who visit the Corfu Public Central Library to read mathematics for the next day's class. However, one girl questions the value of mathematics. But through the examples given by the rest of the group, it becomes clear that they are in our lives every day. There is also a pupil who is the narrator and gives more specific information.

The end result has already been edited into a video of around 3 and a half minutes, with which the school will take part in this year's festival.
