CORFU. "We must use all means available to get some kind of intervention from the Prime Minister, Parliament and party leaders."
North Corfu Mayor Giorgos Mahimaris is calling on all Corfu organisations and businesses, islanders and residents here to spare no effort to prevent the closure of the Smile of the Child residential home in Magoulades.
He sent a letter to representatives of the Orthodox and Catholic Churches in the Ionian Islands, local and regional authorities, MPs, organisations and groups and personalities from Corfu and elsewhere.
"The facility is going to be closed and 14 poor children will be sent to other facilities away from Corfu, having an awful psychological effect on them as they will be taken away from their friends, school and familiar environment - adding more distress on top of what they have already experienced.
There is now a feeling of sadness and frustration in the Corfu community which has held the residential home in its heart all the years that it has been operating.
It is up to us all together to use all means available to get some kind of intervention from the Prime Minister, Parliament and party leaders so that the facility can continue to operate in a building that meets all the legal specifications.
Let all of us in Corfu work together in the name of humanity, solidarity and love."
