CORFU. "The South Corfu Municipal Council must meet immediately to come to a specific decision and submit a request to the Government".
The DIMOSYN leader Nikos Goussis referred to the extensive flooding in South Corfu caused by the bad weather in the last few days:
Once again, the long and heavy rainfall caused extensive flooding over a large area in our Municipality in the last few days.
Following consultation with local officials, a DIMOSYN team visited the areas that were hit by the floods on Saturday, where they witnessed incredible natural disasters, for which any description would be poor and incomplete.
In Ai Giorgis, Argyrades, part of the shore road and part of a bridge collapsed towards the sea, while at another area the rushing water destroyed part of the road.
But the picture at Chlomos, Agios Dimitris and from Messonghi to Psara caused sadness and fear!
Slopes - more or less steep - collapsed in various places, resulting in mud and earth ending up on the roads and closing them either partially or completely.
Unfortunately, as we were informed, the next day after our visit, the landslides continued and the damage is now so great that it is not worth mentioning any mistakes that may have increased some of the damage.
Preventive measures should certainly be intensified by the Municipal and Regional Civil Protection Services at some point.
For the time being, it seems impossible for the local government to cope with the damage with its few resources. Of course, the problem will not be solved by means of emergency funding either, which is usually slow and certainly not sufficient. Besides, it is possible that it occured due to geological causes.
Who will provide convincing answers and guaranteed solutions, if not a competent state body?
The South Corfu Municipal Council must meet immediately to come to a specific decision and submit a request to the Government.
