CORFU. Whenever it rains the road is filled with mud from the building site.
Local residents told Enimerosi that the condition of the road outside the construction site where building work on the new Ikos hotel unit is being carried out has become intolerable. Whenever it rains earth and stones in the site become mud and pour out onto the road creating an insufferable situation for passing drivers and residents.
Passing the buck
Residents are complaining that none of the authorities are taking responsibility for clearing the road despite their appeals. With their complaints falling on deaf ears, local resident Vassilis Papadimitriou decided to ask Enimerosi to publish the story in the hope that someone responsible will take notice.
"Our municipality told us that the road is the responsibility of the Ionian Islands Regional Administration, who, in turn, told us that we needed to speak with the contractor," Mr. Papadimitriou said. "When the situation is completely unbearable the contractor comes out with a few brushes and then disappears again."
Mr. Papadimitriou said that the problems began in the summer and things are much worse now due to the rainfall which turns the earth into mud and the road then becomes slippery.
"The road is now covered in earth and mud. It's completely intolerable. Dust comes out of the construction site and when it rains the road becomes slippery. Lots of lorries come in and out of the site and the edge of the road is full of earth, stones and mud."
