CORFU. Meropi Ydraiou speaks of spreading of false news with petty political motives.

The controversy over the redevelopment of the Garitsa and Anemomylos Parks continues, with residents continuing to protest and the Municipal Authority talking about spreading of false news with petty political motives.

After the press conference given by the Garitsa Park Cultural Society calling for a protest at tomorrow's Municipal Council meeting, the Central Corfu Mayor Meropi Ydraiou and the Deputy Mayor for Technical Works Nikos Kalogeros proceeded to a full briefing and sent a clear message that the work addressed to and done for society does not fit misinformation. Also present at the briefing were the contractor Giorgos Veronikis, the agronomist Manolis Klapadakis and the Green Service Head Giorgos Zaragas.

"Only 35 trees"

The Deputy Mayor for Technical Works Nikos Kalogeros listed in detail all the projects included in the redevelopment. Regarding the cutting of trees that has caused reactions, he stressed once again that only the dead and dangerous trees are being cut down and not the healthy ones.

He clarified that some of the things mentioned in the study, like the palm trees, have fallen or dried up and have been cut down. The final number according to Mr. Kalogeros is only 35 trees and the area will not be concreted, as those who are protesting are saying.

It was also pointed out that 500 bushes and 10,000 ornamental plants will be planted, as well as lawn.

The skate park

As for the controversial issue of the creation of a skate park, Mr. Kalogeros said that the Technical Works Department asked the Managing Authority as to whether there is a possibility of changing the contracted project.

The Managing Authority responded that if there are any substantial changes, the project's inclusion and the funding may be withdrawn.

As the Mayor clarified, the cancellation of the creation of a skate park would be a substantial change.

Hours and caretakers

As for when the project will be completed, Mrs. Ydraiou informed that the Municipality's services are already drafting the operating regulations for the Parks, which will include, among other things, the hours of operation and caretakers in two shifts.
