CORFU. Work on storm drains has begun - Flood protection work in Spilia to be done in winter.
DEYAK is planning to replace the old sewerage pipes in the Ligeris area of Garitsa with new ones. Engineers are already drawing up plans to ensure quick and complete drainage of wastewater effluent.
"The work is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year," Deputy Mayor and DEYAK board member Vassilis Argyros told Enimerosi. According to Mr. Argyros, the planned work will solve the sewerage problem in the area, which is a frequent source of disruption for the residents with blockages and, with the much-needed replacement of the old pipes. Although it is not a big project, with a budget of €25,000, he says it will be a big relief for the area.
Cleaning of storm drains
Work on storm drains has already begun in order to allow a steady flow of wastewater effluent into the main pipes as we are now in autumn and the first rainfalls will begin soon. The cleaning work includes removing materials and objects that have gathered and which reduce the channeling capacity of the drains.
The cleaning work has been going on since the beginning of September and has already been completed in Kanoni near the Ariti Hotel, in Agia Efimia and in Potamos.
"There are crews clearing storm drains in areas identified by our department as well as those brought to our attention by residents," Mr. Argyros said.
Corfu Airport
The airport is also an area with problems with frequent flooding whenever there is rain. Although some work has been done, such as the removal of eucalyptus trees and levelling the road, the problems remain.
"The problem has been dealt with to a large extent," Central Corfu Deputy Mayor for Technical Works Nikos Kalogeros told Enimerosi, "and although there may be some issues when weather conditions worsen, they pass quickly due to the work that has been done. Work needs to be done, however, in collaboration with Fraport on the running off of rainwater into Halkiopoulos Lagoon."
Spilia is another area which suffers from regular flooding. A permanent solution will be provided here with the construction of a pipe which will take the rainwater deep into the sea rather than into the harbour.
This work is scheduled to be done once the work on the Marina in Spilia has been completed, which, according to the supervising engineer, will be this winter.
