CORFU. The aim of the programme is, on the one hand, to gradually reduce the number of strays through sterilisation, chipping, keeping a record and adoption and, on the other, their well-being by ensuring veterinary care where necessary to all stray animals.
Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality has a programme for the medical care and feeding of stray animals. The aim of the programme is, on the one hand, to gradually reduce the number of strays through sterilisation, chipping, keeping a record and adoption and, on the other, their well-being by ensuring veterinary care where necessary and provision of food, water and protection.
In the last three months, the sixth cycle of the programme is underway, which is being funded by the Municipality's resources, in order to provide care to more animals. For the first time a test will be carried out to detect diseases potentially dangerous to the well-being of dogs and humans, such as leishmaniasis.
From 2020 to date, 433 stray dogs have been sterilised and have received veterinary care, while for the first time there was a programme for stray cats as well, where 110 cats received care. With the valuable assistance of volunteers and associations, 180 animals have been adopted, a number much higher than in previous years.
An extensive network has been developed in the municipality with 25 feeding and watering spots for dogs and cats to ensure their well-being. The network is maintained on a daily basis with dried food and water by a team of municipal employees. The Municipality purchased 420 20kg packages of dog food and 406 packages of cat food, while a study is underway to purchase more food.
The Municipality is taking every opportunity provided by the existing legal system, the available resources and its capabilities, in order to solve the problem of stray animals once and for all. The Municipal Authority is optimistic that this effort will receive the appropriate support, so that the number of stray animals will be significantly reduced and gradually eliminated with everyone's help.
