CORFU. The Central Corfu Municipal Finance Committee approved the transport and landfill of up to 15,000 tons of waste.
The Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality chose the tranport of municipal solid waste and its landfill in Palairos from July, in order to address the major issue of waste management, which becomes even more intense in the summer due to the increased tourism and the Municipality's inability to manage the problem on its own. So after the Kozani landfill, where the waste of the Central Corfu Municipality is already being sent, the Palairos landfill also comes into play. It is worth noting that the waste of the other two municipalities of the island also goes there.
Up to 15,000 tons
The Central Corfu Municipal Finance Committee approved at the meeting held on June 14 the terms of the contract between the municipal authority and the Aitoloakarnania FODSA with a €600,000 budget (including VAT) for the transport and landfill of up to 15,000 tons of waste.
The Deputy Mayor for Cleaning Services and Recycling Yiannis Seremetis told Enimerosi that in Kozani's Waste Management Facility there is the possibility of transporting 27,500 tons of waste per year. However, because it is certain that due to tourism, the number of rubbish will increase, reaching up to 40,000 tons, it was decided to start the transport and landfill of waste in Palairos next month.
The waste that will be transported by the Central Corfu Municipality at its own expense and responsibility to the Palairos Landfill, will only be municipal solid waste, in accordance with the legislation, and nothing else.
“On a monthly basis we reach 4,000 tons of waste, while every other day 256-260 tons of waste go to Kozani. However, we believe that due to tourism in Kozani as well, the landfill will not be able to serve us. Thus, it was approved that the waste will start being transported to Palairos from the beginning of July. Maybe we will not have to send all 15,000 tons there. Of course, it is a solution that is in our interest because it has lower financial costs,” Mr. Seremetis told Enimerosi.
Cheaper
At the moment, the transport of a ton of waste to the Kozani landfill costs €83.75 (including VAT). However, the cost of the transport to the Palairos landfill, due to the shorter distance to be covered, will reduce the price by €10-12. In fact, as set out in the contract, the landfill cost of the waste is €40/ton (excluding VAT).
The total cost will be borne by the Central Corfu Municipality and the money will come from state fees. The contract will be valid until 31 December 2022 or until the Municipality reaches 15,000 tons of waste.
Inability
The Aitoloakarnania FODSA will be responsible for the landfill of up to 15.000 tons of the Central Corfu Municipality's municipal waste per year, due to the Municipality's temporary inability to transport them to another licensed landfill. However, Mr. Seremetis told Enimerosi that the Central Corfu Municipality has already requested from the competent Ministry the renewal of the contract with the Kozani Municipality for 2023 and 2024.
