CORFU. There was a meeting in Garitsa Park on Thursday evening.
Members of Garitsa Park Cultural Society gathered along with members of the public, including municipal councillors, to discuss what is happening with the construction of a skate park, which they are opposed to.
The Cultural Society said that it has been informed by the Mayor that the construction of the skate park will proceed despite the Municipal Council voting for the project to be abandoned.
Society President Alexandros Vergos presented the latest developments and the representatives of the following parties expressed their support - Kerkyra Na Zis, Proti i Kerkyra and Kerkyraiki Anagennisi - as well as Yiannis Borbotis from Laiki Sispirosi and Giorgos Karydis.
Regional Council Vice-President Alekos Mihalas was also present, as were former Deputy Regional Governor Nikoletta Pandi and Workers Centre President Stamatis Pelais.
Those present put their signatures to the following protest text: "We strongly protest against the concreting of 900 sq.m. of green land in order to construct a skate park. This is a green area for families to walk in - an area of natural beauty and a tourist attraction is to be converted into an area of noisy activities."
