CORFU. Municipal Authority officials have stated that everything will be ready on 1 July, although there are still many things that need to be done – mainly building and construction work.

The Central Corfu Municipality will have to work at a fast pace in order to repair the destroyed camping facilities on Vidos Island after four years of being closed.

The summer camps last operated in 2017, due to the new legal framework that set stricter requirements for their licensing. The camps seems to have been neglected by the Municipal Authorities and combined with the two years of the pandemic that followed, the old facilities are now at a terrible condition.

Municipal Authority officials have stated that everything will be ready on 1 July, although there are still many things that need to be done – mainly building and construction work. They are confident that if all the services involved coordinate with each other, the deadlines will be adhered to. It remains to be seen.

What work remains to be done

The muncipal councillor responsible for Vidos Island Spyros Neratzis told Enimerosi that the fencing had been done last year, while the fire safety facilities have just been installed, since they are required in order to receive a fire safety certificate and an operating licence.

As for the infrastructure, the camp's toilets, which are in a tragic condition, are expected to be renovated. So far, the roof has been replaced, but electrical and plumbing work remains to be done and the sanitary ware to be replaced.

The kitchen will have its roof repaired, but it will remain functional. The campers will eat meals provided by catering businesses. The Deputy Mayor for Technical Works Nikos Kalogeros told Enimerosi that within the next 10 days, the camps will be completely changed.

As for the equipment, tents and beds will soon be provided, while the preparation will be completed by clearing the grass, removing branches and making minor repairs.

Along with the repair work, the procedures for the recruitment of auxiliary, educational and medical staff will also be carried out.

Shuttle service starts today

The Vidos shuttle service with the municipal boat is expected to start today, after having been postponed three times already. According to information, the boat was put to sea yesterday, following the delayed completion of carpentry work. At the same time, the last details with the Port Authority and regarding the insurance contract are being sorted out.

The shuttle service was expected to start this afternoon. The ticket price this year will be €3 return, but it will be free for children, elderly people and people with special needs, volunteers, campers and municipal employees. There will also be the possibility of issuing weekly and monthly travel cards for €8 and €25 respectively.
