CORFU. Donated by the Corfu Heritage Foundation President Spyros Flambouriaris and Lord Jacob Rothschild.

The unveiling of Lord Guilford’s portrait and degree will take place at a special ceremony at the Ionian Academy on Saturday 7 May at 19:00.

The Corfu Heritage Foundation President Spyros Flambouriaris and Jacob Rothschild donated Lord Frederick Guilford’s portrait, as well as the degree he received from the University of Oxford in 1819, to the Ionian University, as it was he who established and organised the Ionian Academy.

The exhibits of Lord Frederick, 5th Earl of Guildford (1766-1827), have been placed in the reception area on the ground floor of the Ionian Academy.

It is an enlarged portrait of the Ionian Academy’s founder, engraved by Pietro Manthion (1803-1888) around 1830, and the degree awarded to Guilford by the University of Oxford in 1819 in recognition of his efforts to found the Ionian Academy, which was officially founded on 29 May 1824.

According to the Corfu Heritage Foundation, “the portrait is inspired by Guilford’s bust, which was sculpted in marble by the Corfiot sculptor Pavlos Prosalentis (1784-1837) and was in the Ionian Academy’s library until 13 September 1943, when it was destroyed during Corfu’s bombing by the Luftwaffe, the German air force”.

The art conservator Spyridoula Prifti was responsible for the archival mounting, while the base where the degree has been placed was donated by the Corfu Print Shop Director Nikos Zabelis.

The unveiling of Lord Frederick Guildford’s portrait and degree will take place at a special event to be held at the Ionian Academy on Saturday 7 May.
