CORFU. The spots will still be available and the construction of new kiosks will be in line with the Old Town Urban Functionality Regulations.

Some of the oldest kiosks in Corfu Town are now a thing of the past.

Central Corfu Municipality is demolishing abandoned kiosks and some whose owners inherited licences but hadn't renewed them as they didn't fulfil the necessary conditions (special needs, families with many children, Cyprus veterans etc.).

The municipality began yesterday with the demolition of the kiosk in Alexandras Ave. outside the former police station and continued today with the kiosks at the beginning of Alexandras Ave., the port (in front of Sette Venti) and the Plakada (Ag. Spyridon Square).

The responsible municipal councillor Spyros Moraitis told Enimerosi that the kiosks are being taken down because they are no longer being used and are health hazards as well as being eyesores.

"There was no longer any interest in some of the spots as they weren't in busy areas," he added.

Mr. Moraitis said that the spots will still be available. For new kiosks to be built, they must be in line with Urban Functionality Regulations, once they have been voted for and implemented.

Corfu Kiosk Tenants Association has protested as, over the past 15 years, it has made proposals for modern kiosks with a traditional look, but these have been rejected by the Inspectorate of Antiquities.
