CORFU. The Inspectorate of Antiquities Director Tenia Rigakou updated Corfu ND MP Stefanos Gikas on the implementation of the programmes approved.
Following his recent meeting with the General Secretary for Culture Giorgos Didaskalou, the Corfu ND MP Stefanos Gikas met today with the Inspectorate of Antiquities Director Tenia Rigakou and she updated him on the implementation of the programmes approved, while they also visited the Old Fortress to see the restoration work.
Following the visit, Stefanos Gikas stated the following:
“I had a discussion with Mrs. Rigakou on the issues concerning our many monuments. It is worth noting that we are in close cooperation with the General Secretary for Culture Giorgos Didaskalou and our aim is still the continuous funding for our monuments.
As Mrs. Rigakou confirmed, projects totalling over €2,500,000 have been approved, are mature and will immediately begin to be implemented.
Specifically, about €1 million are for the fire safety and fire protection works for the Old and New Fortresses, Mon Repos and the Kassiopi Castle. It is worth noting that the studies are mature and were carried out under the responsibility of the Corfu Inspectorate of Antiquities, with the suggestions and contribution of the Corfu Fire Service.
About €1 million concern accessibility works for the Old and New Fortresses, Mon Repos and Paleopolis, along with the supply of special electric vehicles. It is also planned to purchase equipment for the organisation of cultural events (e.g. chairs, projectors, etc.).
Finally, about €500,000 concern rockfall protection works for the Old Fortress, the study of which has been completed.
I also had the opportunity to see in person and get updated on the project for the support the Martinengo Rampart in the Old Fortress and the restoration study, which have been included in the Recovery Fund.
In the near future, I will visit again the Ministry of Culture to discuss the issues regarding the restoration of the monuments.”
