CORFU. Within the next two weeks rural road improvements in northwest Corfu will be contracted out.

Road improvement work in Central Corfu, which was contracted out in December, is well under way.

Road surfacing is being carried out in Triklino from the Afra junction to Alepou and the work done in Pelekas will be completed once the road markings are finished.

The road surfacing work in Triklino was overseen on Wednesday by the Deputy Regional Governor for Corfu Kostas Zorbas, Deputy Regional Governor for Infrastructure and Technical Works Manolis Orphanoudakis and the Regional Council President Nikos Mouzakitis.

Deputy Regional Governor Kostas Zorbas told Enimerosi that priority is being given to the main regional roads so that they can be completed before the Easter period. He added that work will begin in North Corfu in the next two weeks, probably starting from Sidari.

"The work begins with milling the road and then a new surface is laid. The promise that roadworks will begin in Corfu in March is being fulfilled. After many years, proper work on the roads is being done in Corfu - not just filling in holes," Mr. Zorbas said.

Third project

According to Mr. Zorbas, the third major project - rural road improvements in northwest Corfu, with a budget of €4,512,500 - is expected to be contracted out in the next two weeks.

The invitation for tenders for the project to improve the Corfu-Kavos main road and other roads in South, with a budget of €3,003,000, was the first to go out but there is a delay in the procedure due to the fact that one of the contractors has lodged an appeal.

Vrioni-Moraitika

The Ionian Islands Regional Administration has begun the procedure for tenders for the resurfacing of the road between Vrioni and Moraitika.

The Financial Committee has given the go-ahead for the invitation for tenders via HSPPA (Hellenic Single Public Procurement Authority) for a technical consultant to assist the Regional Technical Works Department to put the project out for tender.

"Once the technical consultant has been recruited, the tender procedures can go ahead," Mr. Zorbas said.
