CORFU. The beginning of this year΄s tourist season is approaching and the first international flights are expected on Sunday 27 March.
Civil Aviation Authority Employees' Union President Dimitris Roussos says that, at the moment, 11 flights are expected on the first day of the season:
4 flights from London and 1 each from Vienna, Brussels, East Midlands, Bristol, Milan, Berlin and Geneva.
On Monday 28 March, at least 7 flights are expected - 3 from London, and 1 each from Milan, Manchester, Krakow and Poznan.
The airlines flying to Corfu on the first five days are Ryanair, Easyjet and British Airways.
It is likely that more flights and airlines will be added.
Losses from Russian and Ukrainian markets not serious
With regard to the expected losses from the Russian and Ukrainian markets, in 2019 we had 45,000 tourist from Russia (3.1%) and 2,700 from Ukraine (0.1%) out of a total of 1,430,000. In 2020 there were no arrivals from the two countries out of a total of 410,000 and in 2021 there was a significant increase in arrivals from Ukraine - 19,300 (2.1%) - and a drop in arrivals from Russia - 9,920 (1%) - out of a total of 915,000 arrivals.
Reduction in Civil Aviation Authority personnel
Dimitris Roussos says that, all going well, this year's season is expected to go well and reach the same levels as 2019. No improvements, however, have been made over the winter to infrastructure and personnel. "Civil Aviation Authority employees are expected to handle the situation and ensure the safety of flights with even fewer employees, no funding for improvements to infrastructure, spare parts and consumables even though Air Traffic services bring in €150-200m for the Greek state every year."
