CORFU. The Municipal Council spent almost six hours discussing Garitsa Society΄s request not to create a skate park.

Local residents have been protesting strongly against the plan to construct a skate park as part of the regeneration of Garitsa Park, complaining about the concreting of the park and the noise.

Their representative Alexandros Vergis spoke at the council meeting and said that the construction of the skate park is included in the second phase of the regeneration and so there is nothing to prevent the first phase, with which they don't have a problem, going ahead.

Anemomylos Cultural Society and its representative Pantelis Kontos are not against the project - which provoked reactions from some.

The proposal

Following a heated discussion, the residents' proposal was put to a vote and there was a majority in favour - 20 for and 19 against.

The proposal that won by a majority was that the Managing Authority will be requested to remove the skate park from the plans and not to proceed with inviting tenders for the work.

How the voting went

The 19 against the proposal were: members of Ms. Ydraiou's party, Magioladitis (Ekkinisi), Spyros Poulis (Kerkyra Allagis), Panos Varouchas (Kerkyra Psila), Maria Dri (Kerkyra 180).

The 20 for the proposal were: the parties led by Trepeklis, Kaloudis and Sarlis, Laiki Sispirosi, Giorgos Karydis (Kerkyraiki Symmahia), Varotsis (Kerkyra Psila).

Central Corfu Mayor Meropi Ydraiou said, "We will be judged by future generations for thie decision."

Municipal budget to be discussed today

Due to the lateness of the hour, no other topics were discussed at the council meeting and the special meeting to vote on the budget for the financial year 2022 didn't go ahead.

There will be a council meeting tonight at 19:00 to discuss and vote on the technical programme, followed by the special budget meeting.
