CORFU. At least 38 Corfu organisations took part in the protest.

A large protest demonstration is taking place in Corfu Town outside the former Prefecture as part of a nationwide protest organised by unions against poverty, the shrinking of disposable income and the government's pandemic policies.

At least 38 Corfu organisations are taking part in the protest, including the following: Corfu Workers' Centre, ADEDY, Corfu Federation of Agricultural Unions, Union of Self-Employed, Union of Hotel, Tourism and Catering Employees, Secondary Teachers' Union (ELME), Corfu Union of Private Sector Employees, Building Workers' Union, Union of Bank Employees (OTOE), Hellenic Women's Federation and others.

"Today, the Corfu working class, the self-employed and farmers are coming together with workers from across the country to loudly reject the rise in the cost of living, the undermining of people's rights, the degrading of the health and education systems and the war which will have consequences on our lives," Corfu Workers' Centre President Stamatis Pellais told Enimerosi. He said that there will be an escalation over the coming days with a series of protests:

- 2 March: Hotel, Catering and Tourism employees strike with a convoy gathering at Corfu Airport at 11:00
- 8 March: Protest demonstration at Corfu Workers' Centre at 10:00
- 16 March: Building workers strike and demonstration at Corfu Workers' Centre at 10:00

There was music at today's demonstration, followed by speeches from union representatives. This will be followed by a march through Corfu Town.

Demonstrators say that the rise in the cost of living and austerity cannot go on. Nor can the reduction of disposable income, the consequences of the pandemic and the neglect of the health and education systems.
