CORFU. Work began early this morning with bushes being pruned and cut down.

Work began on the regeneration of Garitsa with residents gathered in protest against the laying of concrete in one section to create a skate park.

Residents responded to the call from Garitsa Park Cultural Society to come and protest once again for the natural environment of the area to be conserved.

The protest was peaceful and took place next to the basketball court, where it is planned to create the skate park. A banner was put up protesting against the concreting of a section of the park.

There was a discreet police presence at the Douglas Column with a patrol car and motorcyclists for a short while and they then left.

Cutting of bushes

Work began early in the morning with bushes being pruned and cut down. Plastic nets were set up around the work area, with members of the Cultural Society standing nearby.

Garitsa Park Cultural Society treasurer Yiannis Yiannoulis told Enimerosi that 11 individuals will be taking legal action against the construction of a skate park. They also plan to go to the scheduled Central Corfu Municipal Council meeting on Friday to express their views.

Planned work

Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipal Green Maintenance Department has said that the initial work to be done is to remove the trees that are dead or diseased and those whose roots have broken up the pavements. Dead and dangerous branches will also be cut.

157 new ornamental trees will be planted as well as 500 new bushes and 10,000 aromatic plants.
