CORFU. Problems could arise regarding the project if residents go to court on the issue of creating a skateboard area.
The regeneration project includes €2,080,000 works along the entire length of the Garitsa and Anemomylos Parks, from Douglas Column to the area of Nautilus Cafe.
The Deputy Mayor for Technical Works Nikos Kalogeros clarified that of the 33,000 sq.m. of greenery, only 900 sq.m. will be used for the creation of a skateboard area, next to the basketball court. However, this has raised strong opposition from residents, who are claiming that this project does not fit the character of the area, pointing out that the place where the skateboard area will be built will be full of concrete.
“The skateboard area will be placed next to the basketball court with a concrete surface coating along with special low-height equipment not exceeding half a metre, which has specific standards and certifications, while there will also be fencing and lighting. This work will be carried out on just 900 sq.m. out of a total of 33,000 sq.m. of the Park’s greenery. Does the same apply to the cycle path that is several metres long or the paving that is on the side?” said Mr. Kalogeros.
Operational regulations
He pointed out that there had already been discussions on this project by the previous Municipal Authority, but there had been no objections at the time. In line with the Mayor’s commitment, Mr. Kalogeros said that the Park will have operational regulations that did not exist until now, with caretakers, permanent gardeners, street cleaners and cleaners for the toilets, while the sports facilities will be available for use at certain times.
“The Park will now be an organisation and will not be what it is today, i.e. in a poor condition,” said Mr. Kalogeros.
Potential problems
Commenting, however, on the intentions of the Garitsa Cultural Association to go to court on the issue of creating a skateboard area, he did not rule out the possibility that the project could encounter problems, with significant consequences both for the project itself and for its funding, as it is a project that has been included in the ESPA funding programme.
