CORFU. The transfer of water from the ‘Blue Eye’ spring in Albania – an issue which had also been discussed in the distant past – is once again at the forefront of discussion.

The ‘Blue Eye’ is located a few kilometres away from Saranda in the province of Mesopotamos and is one of the 18 springs of the Bistrica river.

The North Corfu Mayor Giorgos Mahimaris brought once again the issue back at the forefront by contacting Saranda officials.

In fact, on Friday he had a meeting scheduled with the Saranda Mayor and local businesspeople. He encountered, however, an unexpected obstacle, as he was not allowed to leave the country due to a pending court case. Although the issue had actually been resolved, the authorities had not been informed. And when the authorities were finally informed, there was no itinerary available anymore. Thus, only Deputy Mayor Hariton Koutsouris attended the meeting, as he told ERT.

According to the Deputy Mayor, contacts have been made with Saranda. However, in order for there to be actual results, an intergovernmental agreement will be needed.

On the other hand, the government is planning to solve Corfu's water supply problem with the large-scale dam project. According to the Deputy Mayor, however, this plan will not solve North Corfu’s problem.
