CORFU. By the end of January, the recruitment of staff for all nurseries and kindergartens on the island is expected to be completed by the Corfu Social Protection & Solidarity Union.

Intensive work is underway for the operation of the two new nurseries in the Corfu Town centre. However, although they were expected to start operating earlier, the pandemic and some issues that arose with the repair work and the restoration of the existing rooms, which will now have a different use, have delayed their opening.

The two new structures are expected to provide a sigh of relief for dozens of families that are in need of support in this area. Their establishment was decided by the Corfu Social Protection & Solidarity Union administration at the end of last August, due to the increased demand, as several children were not entitled to free accommodation and had to be taken to private nurseries or stay at home.

Recruitment of staff

The President of Corfu Social Protection & Solidarity Maria Zervou told Enimerosi that the recruitment of staff under part-time, fixed-term private-law contracts in Corfu nurseries and kindergartens – including the staff that will be employed in the new nurseries – is expected to be completed until the end of January.

There was a particularly great interest shown, as 200 applications were submitted for the positions of nursery teachers, nursery teacher assistants, cooks, cleaners and occupational therapists. “We are making great progress and soon the two new nurseries will be handed over to the community,” Mrs. Zervou said.

The two new nurseries

In particular, the first nursery will operate in a part of the Public Centre for Senior Citizens (KAPI) building, which can accommodate up to 27 infants. The address is Akadimias 3. The 2nd Nursery, as it has been named, will be located in a different space from that of the existing structure and will have a different entrance.

At the same time, the 4th Nursery, on 23 Kolokotroni St. (next to the new Courthouse) with a capacity of up to 34 infants, has now become the 3rd Nursery. As Mrs. Zervou explained, although the Social Protection & Solidarity Union’s platform for applications for registration is open, the pending applications of the previous period will be checked first.
