CORFU. How many tons of clothing and footwear were recycled last year.
46 tons of recyclable clothing were collected at the collection points and transported outside Corfu, without burdening the Temploni landfill. ‘All together for Corfu’ in collaboration with the North Corfu Municipality managed to collect a total of 16 tons since last May.
The head of the ‘All together for Corfu’ Spyros Neratzis published the results of the third year of clothing recycling on the island:
“2021 was the third year we recycled clothing and footwear. The total amount that we all managed to keep away from the Temploni, Kozani or Palairos landfills was 46,000 kilos!
We would like to thank all our fellow citizens for their participation and the trust they showed us.
The North Corfu Municipality’s participation from May 2021 was significant. This participation proves that when recycling is organised, systematic and consistent and it is done with modern methods and with the Municipality’s participation, then the citizens’ participation is also much greater.
No body, no voluntary group can or should replace the Municipality. Instead, they should assist the Municipality whenever necessary.
The total quantity was 46,000 kilos of which 16,055 kilos were from the North Corfu Municipality.
Taking into account the population ratio of the two Municipalities, the global research on the shortest time of use of clothing and footwear by residents of urban cities and the North Corfu Municipality’s time of participation (from May 2021), we can conclude the following:
1. ‘All Together for Corfu’, within 3 years, with only one collection point and with the support and trust of our fellow citizens, managed to collect 40% of the total amount of clothing and footwear of the Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality.
2. The North Corfu Municipality collected 43.4% of the total quantity, compared to 17%. It collected 16.055kg, while it should have collected 5.850kg – an increase of 274%, which after analysing the data, we realised that it is due to the fact that this effort is made at the Mayor Giorgos Mahimaris and the Municipal Authority’s initiative and direction, as well as the passion, knowledge, goals and consistency of the Deputy Mayor Spyridoula Kokkali and her partners.
3. For the Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality, there is already the will, the information, the willingness and active participation of our fellow citizens, as well as our support, if needed. It remains for our Municipality to complete those actions that will lead us to the effective and correct management of clothing and footwear, in order to contribute to the environmental impact and save resources for our Municipality”.
