CORFU. Deputy Regional Governor for Infrastructure & Technical Works Manolis Orphanoudakis: “By the end of 2021 the project will be put out to tender.”

Work on Garitsa road from Desyllas factory to Anemomylos still remains unfinished and there is extensive damage in various parts of the pavement, which is particularly dangerous for pedestrians. The Ionian Islands Region has included an amount of €1,000,000 in its 2021 budget in order to carry out the necessary work. However, the Ministry for the Environment’s decision regarding the exemption of the environmental conditions, so that the project can be put out to tender and commence, is still pending.

In fact, Enimerosi had published on 5 August 2021 that a contractor was expected to be in place before October according to a statement by the Deputy Regional Governor for Infrastructure & Technical Works Manolis Orphanoudakis. However, at the Ionian Islands Regional Council’s meeting on 24 September, the award of the contract was postponed to November!

According to Mr. Orphanoudakis, if this issue is resolved – which nevertheless delays the implementation of the project – the tender will be held by the end of 2021!

Three-month wait

As he told Enimerosi, the Ministry for the Environment is aware and has understood how serious the problem is, due to the shorefront’s poor condition. However, for three months now, the Ionian Islands Region’s decision on the request for approval of the exemption of the environmental conditions under Article 12 A of Law 2971/2001 is still pending.

Mr. Orphanoudakis explained that, based on this and although the environmental study for the project exists, the Article itself is calling for an exemption of the environmental conditions. “If the request for the exemption of the environmental conditions is approved, the project will be put out to tender immediately in accordance with the Regional Council decision to accelerate the procedures,” said Mr. Orphanoudakis.

10 months

The Ionian Islands Region had announced in a press release on 24 September 2021 that immediately after the Ministry for the Environment’s decision, a request will be submitted to the Municipal Land Agency for the granting of permission for work to be done immediately on the shore road. The pavement restoration will start as soon as the infrastructure provided for in the study is completed.

The project will be implemented by the Municipal Technical Works Department and it is estimated that it will take ten months to be completed. The Technical Works Department has already completed the technical study.

The main demand

The restoration, however, of the Garitsa shorefront, is the main demand of the people of the island, so that the shore road will have the image that it deserves as one of the main Corfu tourist attractions. Regional councillors and the Corfu SYRIZA MP Alexandros Avlonitis have also raised this particular issue.

The work to be done

The work to be done will involve road shoring, restoration of the cavities created by the sea and complete pavement restoration, in the places where there are holes in order to avoid similar problems in the future.

At the same time, full provision will be made to reinforce the existing wall to avoid similar phenomena. It should be noted that the Ionian Islands Regional Council had decided to implement the project for the restoration of the remaining section since 19 February 2021.
